Five Things to do for a Positive 2017

 

Many things are changing in the world at the moment, some of it good but most of it not so good.  With Brexit and an the increase in open hostility towards foreigners, the Government’s introduction of more stringent immigration rules, President Trump’s Muslim ban, it is quite easy to lose hope and get disheartened.

In these uncertain times it is important to remain positive and hopeful because it is this hope that will see us through.  Rather than worrying about the implications of these events, focus on making 2017 a success by remaining positive and doing things that will bring you success and fulfilment.   Below are five things you can do to create change that will see you through 2017 and beyond;

  1. Set aside time to reflect and meditate. Meditation not only helps you become more aware of your thoughts and your actions, it also decreases blood pressure and lowers levels of anxiety, slows down the hectic pace of life and decreases stress thus leading to an overall healthier life.   Spend at least fifteen minutes a day where you switch off and pay attention to the present moment to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you.  You may not notice the effect immediately but stick with it and you will begin to be more positive of the world and appreciative of the people around you.
  2. Sort out your finances .The impact of Brexit and Britain beginning negotiations to leave the EU will soon start being felt so it is important to have your finances in order. Set a budget for your short term and long term goals and stick to it, keep a record of your expenses so you know exactly what you are spending your money on, and cut out spending on the things you do not need. Figure out how much you owe and create a plan and target date for clearing the debt; and most importantly put together a folder of files with information that will help your loved ones figure out how to handle your finances in case anything happens to you.  Health insurance, mortgage protection, life insurance and writing a will are difficult but vital to maintaining the long term stability of your loved ones.
  3. De-clutter. This applies to your mind, your schedule and your house. Let go of the negative emotions that you are holding on to, make peace with the people you have fallen out with and if you find that you are stressed find ways of managing the stress. In your home create space and even earn money by selling things you no longer need on eBay or Amazon market place. If you do not know where to start, try the KonMari De-clutter your schedule! Master the art of turning down invitations, activities or anything else that does not profit your health, relationships, spirituality or finances. Learn to rest and take care of yourself. Everything must be done in good measure.
  4. Be grateful for every day. As humans we never appreciate what we have and instead dwell on the negative, it is good to remember daily that some people did not make it through the night and there are others in circumstances that are far worse than yours.  Think about the young man walking across Libya to try and get on a boat to Europe so he can provide his family.  So next time your bus is late instead of complaining about it, be grateful that you have a comfortable bus that will driving you on a smooth road to your destination.
  5. Exercise. The benefits of exercise are well documented. Try to be active daily and aim to achieve at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day through a variety of activities. We are less active nowadays because technology has made our lives easier meaning, we now mostly live sedentary lives.  This inactivity is described by the Department of Health as a “silent killer”. So next time you are running an errand walk or cycle instead of jumping in the car, take the stairs instead of the lift, join a running club or follow the NHS From Couch to 5k program, go dancing. There are plenty of ways to get your thirty minutes a day without joining a gym or spending money.
